England may have bowed gracefully out of the World Cup early, but the streets of Luton are still ringing with the cheers of celebration for Luton Town FC’s recent promotion into League One. Luton loves sport in all its forms, and you don’t have to look far to find the fantastic opportunities on offer. Residents and visitors alike are spoilt for choice here, in the healthiest possible way.

Active Luton

Described as ‘Luton’s leading sport and leisure trust’, Active Luton is on a mission to promote physical activity in all its forms to Luton residents. This extensive organisation is the responsible for running many of the leading leisure centres in our town:

  • Inspire - Luton Sports Village
  • Lewsey Sports Park and Swimming Pool
  • Lea Manor Recreation Centre and Swimming Pool
  • Hightown Community Sports and Arts Centre
  • Stockwood Park Athletics Centre
  • Stockwood Park Golf Centre
  • Dell Farm Outdoor Centre

Collectively, these centres of health and vitality offer a wide range of sporting opportunities, from swimming and the gym, to football and golf. And plenty more in between. Whatever sport gets you moving, you are almost certain to find a place to indulge your passion in Luton.

The Active Luton Inclusive Fitness Initiative provides fitness support for people with disabilities, with adaptable gym equipment and specially trained staff at certain Luton leisure sites, and swimmers with disabilities are welcomed at all of Active Luton’s pools across the town.

At Penrose, we’re all for helping young people get healthy and stay that way, and Luton has this covered too. Local football teams are abundant, and across the town there is a fantastic range of clubs on offer that specifically target young people - kick the Xbox into touch for a while and try your hand at athletics, gymnastics, boxing, roller-skating, basketball, netball or martial arts instead.

With Active Luton, kids who find traditional sports a drag can try out some off-piste outdoor adventures at Dell Farm during the school holidays. Here, you can get your Bear Grylls on with a Bushcraft Survival Week or participate in a summer Adventure Camp that offers awesome challenges that include caving, bouldering and orienteering. Or simply sign up for the odd day here and there to dip your toe in their sporty waters.

Older residents are not forgotten either. Fitness for older generations is championed in the Active Luton ‘Full of Life Club’, which delivers a packed timetable of activities at centres across the town. Nordic walking, line dancing, aqua-fit and chair-based fitness are just some of the things on offer, delivering diverse options and a chance to socialise while you exercise.

Venue 360 Sports Centre

Situated up at Capability Green near the airport, Venue 360 is a conference, events, leisure and fitness complex that welcomes residents from across the town. Its facilities are continually being upgraded and refined, as this non-profit organisation ploughs all available funds back into the upkeep and development of its facilities.

The site boasts 4 artificial turf pitches, all with overhead netting and powerful floodlights. Then there is the vast sports hall that can accommodate five-a-side football, cricket nets, basketball, volleyball, martial arts, table tennis and netball - check the Venue 360 website for timetables of your sport of choice.

And if an energetic squash or tennis session is more your thing, then avail yourself of Venue 360’s suite of courts. When you’ve finished your workout - in whatever sporting form it takes - you can always relax in one of the centre’s sauna or steam cabins (and if you’re feeling lazy you could skip the sports part altogether, and just treat yourself to a pampering session!)

Venue 360 also offers child-centric activities, with a £5 annual Kids Club Membership that delivers preferential rates on many of the activities on offer at the centre. Subscribers also get advanced booking opportunities on Venue 360’s own range of kids’ holiday activities. These offer children the chance to try out different sports in a safe and supportive environment. Sessions are available daily or weekly to suit every budget, with discounts for siblings.

There is a great selection of fitness classes on offer for adults, and seniors are also well-catered for at Venue 360 with a range of activities geared specifically towards older members.

Luton Vipers - Rugby League at its best

Penrose Estate Agents are proud sponsors of the Luton Vipers, who re-formed in February 2017. The lads of Luton’s Rugby League side train hard, and pound their way up and down the field every week during the season in all weathers. If you’re interested in supporting or even joining the Luton Vipers, you can find them training and playing at Stockwood Park RFC.

Fun for free - explore Luton’s outdoor spaces

Fantastic as the dedicated sports facilities are in Luton, we know that not everyone has the time, energy or cash to spend on paid activities. So here are just a few of the leisure areas in and around our town where you can get moving for free in the great outdoors - these are all on your doorstep when you choose to make Luton your home:

  • Stockwood Park is not just a centre for golf, athletics and rugby - it’s also a brilliant open space where you can walk, run, cycle, or organise a spontaneous game of soccer, rounders, cricket, or whatever takes your fancy
  • Wardown Park, close to the very heart of the town, has a delightful lake, open green spaces and a lovely children’s play park. It also hosts a marked jogging and cycle path that’s ideal for more structured exercise, and free-access tennis courts
  • Luton Hoo Memorial Park is a peaceful landscaped park that is perfect for gentle walks or a quiet run. It’s also home to a bowling green and tennis court
  • Brantwood Park is home to a large grassy area that is perfect for recreational sports of all kinds, and also offers a basketball area and play facilities for younger children
  • If you can lay your hands on a bike and safety helmet, then check out the Luton Area Cycle Network - our town is surrounded by glorious traffic-free routes and quiet country lanes that are just begging to be explored

Luton is very much a community town, not a sprawling urban mass with no heart. There are green spaces and parks all over Luton, ensuring easy access to sports and the outdoors wherever you decide to live in the town.

Choosing a place to live is about more than just your property, and if staying active is high on your location agenda then the team at Penrose will help you to find your health happy in Luton as part of securing the home of your dreams.
